Former Southampton resident Laura May Mathews died on July 20 at the Kings Harbor Multicare Center in The Bronx. She was 78.

Born on July 8, 1931, in Southampton to Charles and Mabel Davis, she worked for the Bulova Watchcase Factory before moving to New York City, where she worked as a home health aide. She married Ezekiel Mathews on April 28, 1982.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a stepson, Ezekiel Mathews III; seven brothers, Robert Davis and his wife Marion of Center Moriches, Larry Davis of Patchogue, Richard Davis and his wife Thomasina of Virginia, Russell Davis of the Bahamas, Douglas Davis of California, and Raymond Davis and Ronnie Davis, both of Connecticut; and four sisters, Gloria and her husband Augustine Mayo of Riverhead, Eleanor Davis of North Carolina, and Kathleen and her husband Henry Smith and Carolyn and her husband Bill Arango, both of Virginia.

She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Libby Davis of Southampton, Sandra Davis and Sylvia Davis; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Three brothers, James Davis, Roosevelt Davis, and Charles Davis Jr., all predeceased her.

Funeral services were held on July 23 at Ross-Roden Funeral Services in The Bronx. Interment followed in Saint Michael Cemetery in East Elmhurst.
