Lena D. Slodki (Kehl) of Southampton died peacefully at home on April 26.
She was born in Greenport to Dorothy (nee Welsh) and Andrew Kehl on April 7, 1931. After graduating from Greenport High School in 1948 at the age of 17, she entered the nursing program at Southampton Hospital at a cost of $75. She graduated in 1951, worked at Southampton Hospital, and became night shift supervisor within a year at the age of 21.
While working at the hospital, she met Edward Slodki, who had emigrated from Poland and was working as an orderly. They hit it off immediately, and as he was an exceptional dancer, they enjoyed many nights at the Polish Hall dancing. They were married on April 18, 1953, and soon after moved into their new home in Southampton, where they raised their two daughters, Mary and Susan. She became a stay-at-home mom raising the two girls and then later became a private duty nurse at Todd Nursing Home when the girls were adults.
Her life was one of caring for others. She was always concerned about her circle of family and friends and wanting to know how they were.
She is survived by her daughters Mary and Susan (Daniel): granddaughters Kelly D’Angelo (Michael) and Danielle Raynor; and great-grandchildren Stella and Luke D’Angelo.
