Southampton native Leora McElroy died on November 22 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, after a long illness. She was 66.
Born to Howard and Ella McElroy of Southampton, she attended Southampton public schools and graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
She taught briefly in Patchogue and, after receiving a master’s degree from Stony Brook University, moved to Montgomery County in Maryland, where she taught special education classes for 30 years. Most of her summers were spent in Southampton, until her health began to fail.
She is survived by two brothers, Theodore McElroy of Homelake, Colorado, and Howard McElroy, and his wife, Susan, of Warminster, Pennsylvania; a niece, Michelle; a nephew, Matthew; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
A memorial service planned for next year will be announced in a future edition of The Press.
