Lester Allen Smith, Formerly Of Westhampton Beach, Dies September 9

Lester Allen Smith, formerly of Westhampton Beach, died on September 9, 2019, at his home in Roscoe, New York. He was 70.

Born June 28, 1949, in Riverhead to John and Irene Smith, and later raised by his mother and stepfather, Malry Tardd Sr., he was a graduate of Westhampton Beach High School. In high school, he was a star on the track team, holding several records that took many years to break. Summers were spent caddying at the local country club with his friends. He also became a very promising boxer in local arena fights. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served and fought in the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, while serving in Vietnam he was exposed to chemical warfare and its physical and harmful lifelong effects contributed to his health issues.

Having been security police while enlisted, he worked in a security related occupation and then locally in several retail fish markets until the effects of war caused him to become disabled.

Survivors said that while he was of average stature, he lived his life like a giant. He possessed the gift for gab and the ability to make many friends during his lifetime. No matter his circumstances he always wore a huge smile. It was his smile that caught the eye of Rosa Perez, and together they raised three daughters and two sons.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by his father, John Smith; his son and namesake, Lester Smith Jr.; and his mother, Irene Tardd. He is survived by his children, Bryant Smith, Winnifred Grillo, Irene Davis and Rochelle Engler. He is also survived by his brother, Malry Tardd Jr.; sisters, Patrica Smith, Priscilla Bloxon, Pamela Bloxon; and stepfather, Malry Tardd Sr.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Visitation and a funeral took place at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach. A military burial took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Southampton Police Reports for the Week of November 13

QUOGUE — Mark Magness, 55, of Rockville Center was arrested by Quogue Police on November 6 and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor. Police pulled Magness over at 7:51 p.m. after receiving a report of a reckless and erratic driver traveling east on Montauk Highway.
