Lifelong Southampton resident Joseph S. Maddock died on March 28 at his home. He was 89.
Born November 11, 1920, in Southampton to Mary (née Jaggar) and Melvin Maddock, he attended Hoffman Island U.S. Maritime Service Training Station. He then worked on ships on the Great Lakes, and during World War II served with the Merchant Marines.
He worked on and off as a bayman, and in various other jobs, including his last with the New York State Highway Department. After retiring, he could often be found clamming in local waters, survivors said, doing what he enjoyed best.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie (née Sizer) Maddock; two daughters, Carole and her husband Bill Clair of Southampton and Linda and her husband John Crittenden of California; two granddaughters, Stephanie Clair Mercer and her husband Trevor Mercer of Southampton and Rebecca Clair Gregory and her husband Tim Gregory of Virginia; two grandsons, William Joseph Clair of Southampton and John Crittenden of Hawaii; three great-granddaughters, Scout Anne Mercer, Enola Lee Mercer, and Riplee Rose Mercer; and a great-grandson, William Chase Gregory.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Maddock; and a sister, Martha Maddock Hefner.
Visitation was on March 30 at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, where a funeral service was held on March 31 with the Reverend Jeanne Baum officiating. Cremation followed.
