It was organized by the South Country Peace Group and co-sponsors included other peace organizations and also religious institutions, including the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stony Brook, Bellport United Methodist Church, and Old South Haven Presbyterian Church. Dr. David John Helfand, former president of Quest University Canada and past chair of Columbia University’s astronomy department, will give a lecture Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the East Hampton Library. The event, hosted by the Hamptons Observatory, begins at 7 p.m. Helfand will discuss his latest book, The Universal Timekeepers: Reconstructing History Atom by Atom, which explores how science can uncover the histories of distant times and places once thought unreachable. The Southampton History Museum will offer guided tours of the colonial-era Halsey House on Thursday, August 21, providing insight into life in 1640, when English settlers first landed at Conscience Point and encountered the Shinnecock people. Two tour times are available: 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m. Participants will learn how the early colonists adapted to a new environment, spending eight formative years in their first settlement at Olde Towne before expanding to establish Southampton’s Main Street in 1648.
