Under billowy white clouds and west, southwest winds in the 12-18 knots range, 70 sailboats raced in Whitebread XXVIII hosted by the Peconic Bay Sailing Association last Saturday. Yacht designs span decades, from Pat Mundus’s engine-less wood double-ended ketch Tern, a 1952 Herreshoff design, custom built By O. Lie-Nielsen in Maine 47 years ago, to the state-of-the art J boats, such as the J-70s and J-80s. This round Shelter Island final race of the season is humorously named after the venerable Whitbread round-the-world race, today known as the Volvo Ocean Race.
