Lois Ethelyn Jones Andrews
Lois Ethelyn Jones Andrews of Water Mill died on May 1 after a short illness.
Born in 1920 in Hayground, she attended the Hayground School and then Bridgehampton High School.
Having lived through the Great Depression and the Hurricane of 1938, Ms. Andrews was a strong, self-reliant individual, according to survivors.
In 1939, she became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and maintained membership in that organization for 74 years.
In 1945, she married John William Andrews. After living a short time in Southampton, she and her husband moved to Water Mill, where they settled to raise a family. When her husband died, Ms. Andrews continued to lead an active lifestyle, including golfing and volunteering at her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, for its holiday and rummage sales.
She was a gifted artist, knitting and crocheting many items for family members and church events.
Ms. Andrews was a direct descendant of the Edwards family, one of the original founding families of East Hampton, Wainscott, Bridgehampton and Southampton, and her Edwards ancestors have been recognized in many articles and books about the history of the Hamptons. Her paternal grandparents, Hadda and George Edward Jones, owned the Pines Hotel in Amagansett and were the original proprietors of the Mecox Bay Duck Farm. Her parents were Eleanor Edwards Jones Smith and Reynolds Leigh Jones, who resided for many years in Hayground.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Andrews, in 1999; a sister, Virginia Jessup; a brother, Charles “Buck” Jones; and two nephews, Leigh Jones of Pennsylvania and Renny Jessup of Massachusetts.
She is survived by daughters, Joyce of Hampton Bays, Barbara of California and Elizabeth of New York City; three grandchildren, Maria, Katie and Sarah; cousins, Joan Wyatt Cox of Florida and Jean George of New Mexico; nieces, Joann Jessup of North Carolina, Gloria Brawley and Irene Crampe, both of Riverhead, Beverly Scorsone of Pennsylvania, Audrey Deaville of Vermont, Cathy Distefano of Water Mill; and nephews Kip Jessup and wife Martha of Massachusetts, Eddie Andrews and wife Carol of New Jersey; and many cousins in Sweden.
Visitation for friends and family will be held at O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton on Friday, May 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, starting at 10 a.m. until a prayer service begins at noon.
Because Ms. Andrews was an avid reader, the family has requested donations be made to the Rogers Memorial Library, 91 Coopers Farm Road, Southampton, NY 11968, for the purchase of large-print books. Donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, 2 South Main Street, Southampton, NY 11968, are also welcomed.
