Long Island Coundil of Churches benefit honors local

author on Oct 27, 2010

In its first-ever event to raise funds for its Riverhead Emergency Food and Community Resources Center, the Long Island Council of Churches will present “Share the Harvest: Helping Neighbors in Need,” on Thursday, November 11, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., at Giorgio’s in Baiting Hollow. The evening will honor Riverhead Building Supply and Carolyn Gumbs, resources manager of LICC Riverhead.

Radio personality Patrick Shea of WALK Radio will serve as emcee.

A resident of the East End for more than 40 years, Ms. Gumbs has been a manager of the Riverhead Emergency Food and Community Resources Center for 31 years. Riverhead Building Supply is a long-time corporate supporter and Friend of the Council.

While the number of East End people in need has dramatically increased, the resources center has been severely crippled in its ability to provide critically needed food and services because of recent cuts in federal, state and county funding.

“So many people are coming to us for help that we’re drowning. They need food, housing, prescription, and transportation assistance,” Ms. Gumbs is quoted as saying in a press release issued by the council, “and their needs are chronic because their wages are falling further and further behind the escalating costs of living. We feel badly when we go home at night if we can’t help someone who comes in for assistance. And we feel uplifted and really good when we can help.”

The hope is that this fundraiser will increase recognition of the council of churches’ vital role in the East End community. The evening will feature a cocktail hour with unlimited wine, beer, soft drinks, dinner, live music and a silent auction. Business/cocktail attire is suggested.

Tickets are $135 ($60 tax deductible). Proceeds will go to the Long Island Council of Churches—the region’s largest ecumenical and interfaith not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

For information or to RSVP call Grace Simonette, at (631) 265-5823 or visit www.liccdinner.com.

Fractures Showing on Southampton Village Board Over Issues Like Meeting Agendas, Records Release, Workforce Housing and More

There was a period of time, not too long ago, when the Southampton Village Board could be counted on to pass almost any resolution or legislation with a 5-0 vote. It happened so frequently, in fact, that many residents began to question if that kind of uniformity of thought was healthy for the village, or if it was a sign that the art of dissent had been lost, along with a willingness to thoughtfully examine both sides of any given issue. One thing’s been made clear in the second half of the calendar year — that period of smooth sailing ... 12 Dec 2025 by Cailin Riley

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. The Urgency of Real

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories.
