Sharing the Ocean

“Eyes on the Water: Boating with Whales” is the title of a just-out and free online course put together by a group led by Carl LoBue, senior marine scientist at The Nature Conservancy, its Ocean Program director based in Cold Spring Harbor in Suffolk County. I’ve gone through the course, and it’s highly important for boaters and, most of all, for those magnificent creatures, whales. It’s atboatingwithwhales.com. It was created by LoBue and his Nature Conservancy team working with marine mammal experts from groups including the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, Gotham Whale, ... 22 Sep 2025 by Karl Grossman

Chilling Headline

I was not going to comment on the unfortunate murder of political influencer Charlie Kirk, but after reading this AP headline, I thought otherwise. The headline, “Trump’s Threat To Target ‘Radical Left’ After Kirk Killing Raises Fears He’s Trying To Silence Foes,” is chilling. The Cato Institute — a libertarian think tank with the mission to undertake public policy discussion, with the principles of limited government, individual liberty and free markets as guideposts — has conducted a study of political violence. On September 11, 2025, Cato released its study of sources of political violence, “Politically Motivated Violence Is Rare in ... by Staff Writer

More Condos?

As I read about the proposed new condos on Majors Path in North Sea [“Southampton Town Board Advances Review of 34-Unit Affordable Housing Proposal in North Sea,” 27east.com, August 13], a few comments and questions come to mind: 1. We already have one condo complex in North Sea. Let’s put this one somewhere else. 2. It’s a distance of about 0.4 miles from the recycling center entrance to Mary’s Lane; SYS, Cove Neck Lane and Straight Path are in between. Majors Path is already very busy in that stretch, and the confluence of Straight Path and Mary’s Lane also creates ... by Staff Writer

A Life on the Water

I am honored to be seeking reelection as your Southampton Town Trustee. Serving in this role for the past two years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me. Over this time, I have seen firsthand the critical importance of the Trustees in managing and protecting our town’s most valuable natural resources. While some of our upland neighbors may not always know the scope of what the Trustees do, anyone who clams, scallops, fishes, paddles, surfs, hunts, boats, swims or owns a waterfront property quickly understands ... by Staff Writer

We Will Fight

Previously, I had an op-ed published with the Washington Blade back in June, Pride Month, about the importance of queer Leftist gun ownership, especially in the current U.S. political climate. This is only proving to be more and more true. Providing further evidence that satire is truly dead, the Department of Justice has openly floated the idea that there should be a ban on transgender individuals from firearm ownership. The idea is so absurd that even historically conservative firearm organizations, including but not limited to the National Rifle Association, have seemingly come forward in support of “all law-abiding individuals” being ... by Staff Writer

Important Habitat

On behalf of the board of directors and the staff at the South Fork Natural History Museum, we urge that the Southampton Town-owned 8.3-acre property located between Sagg Road and Poxabogue Pond be designated as open space under the Community Preservation Fund [“Fate of Southampton Town-Owned Poxabogue Field, Within Sagaponack Village, Is Debated at Town Board Meeting,” 27east.com, September 10]. A grassland habitat is one of the rarest habitats on Long Island and in the entire continental United States. This rare habitat is home to many native grassland species, including eastern bluebirds, field sparrows, savannah sparrows, eastern meadowlarks, American woodcocks, ... by Staff Writer

One by One

There is much calumny in the Letters to the Editor page, especially when it comes to Israel and to the demonstrators who faithfully appear each Sunday to defend it against the bogus charges that are freely uttered by the usual bunch of pro-Hamas, pro-Palestinian, antisemitic rabble that show up each Sunday at the wharf in Sag Harbor. Let us go to the letters one by one. Emelia Baltz [“Hate Has a Home,” Letters, September 4] and Kathy Engel [“Not the Same,” Letters, September 4], both probably members of the Sunday group, have active imaginations when it comes to describing the ... by Staff Writer
