Selma Bakst Silverman
Longtime Sagaponack and Roslyn resident Selma Bakst Silverman died on June 19 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. She was 83.
Born in Brooklyn, she loved New York and appreciated the best the city had to offer, family said.
Survivors described her as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who brought beauty into the world and shared it with those around her. Ranked as a Life Master, she was an accomplished bridge player, a voracious reader and a devotee of music, art and books. Wonderfully articulate, she was a woman of great style, family members said, with a vibrant and keen intellect.
She was an early and strong advocate for women’s rights, civil rights, and social justice. Still, survivors recalled, she gave her deepest love to her family, which was her “proudest achievement.” They added that they will all miss her greatly and cherish her memory forever.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, Alvin Silverman, she is survived by two daughters, Barbara Berke of Massachusetts and Nancy Silverman and her husband Benjamin Nathans of Pennsylvania; a son, Andrew Silverman and his wife Molly Paul of Massachusetts; a sister, Adelaide Wells of California; a brother, Allan Bakst of New York City; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Sally, Jennifer, Ilana, Dora, Gabriel, Nicholas and Will; two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Emily; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held on June 21 at Temple Sinai in Roslyn. Interment was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, Queens.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Emily’s List, 1120 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 1100, Washington, D.C., 20036 or Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, 540 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550 would be appreciated by the family.
