Look to the Future

As a lifelong resident and a 1967 graduate of Pierson High School, I support the purchase of the Marsden Street property by our school district.

I remember in the early 1960s, the “bad boys” would sit on the green metal double-railed fence on Division Street and smoke during lunchtime. Happily, that tradition ended along with the fence. Now we have a chance to look to the district’s future.

Our land-locked schools can certainly use any additional available property. If the district does not purchase this property while it is available, it will be a regrettable mistake that will haunt the district in the future.

In whatever way the district decides to use the property, I do believe that it should be designed to mitigate adverse effects of climate change.

Most people here today don’t remember John Steinbeck living in Sag Harbor, and yet they were in favor of purchasing his former home. One could certainly argue that the money could have been better spent on open space or affordable housing. It could also be argued that there are already enough Steinbeck venues in California.

If you believe the future of our country is in the hands of our youth then the purchase of the Marsden Street property is a no-brainer. Maybe a hundred years from now this land will be used for an entirely different purpose, but at least the district will have that option.
