Lorraine Barrett
Lorraine Ann Barrett of Southampton died January 21 after a long battle with cancer. She was 78.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, she met and married James Barrett in 1949 and lived in Southampton for the past 45 years. She operated the Southampton Cab company for more than 20 years, and spent the last six years teaching people about animals at Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue, which she founded. In all stages of sickness, right up to this past month, there was never a weekend missed at Amaryllis, said survivors. She raised her children to love animals and she sought to teach others the same.
Ms. Barrett was a practicing Catholic and never missed a Sunday at church. A fine spirit and a strong, devoted mother, she will be greatly missed by many, survivors said.
She is survived by her daughters, Christine Distefano and Lorraine Markowski of Southampton; sons, James of Essex, New York, and John of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, James Patrick Barrett; and her sons, Edward, 28, Valentine, 36 and Bruce, 39.
Visitation was at O’Connell Funeral home on January 23. Interment was at Sacred Hearts Cemetery on January 24. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations to Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue in the name of her horse, Lakota, would be appreciated. Donations may be made online at forrascal.com or by mail, 44 Little Fresh Pond Road, Southampton, NY 11968.
