Lost Hikers Located In Sears Bellows Park

Southampton Town Police rescued hikers lost in Sears Bellows Park on Monday. KITTY MERRILL

William Zwart, 69, and David Berchenbriter, 65, both of Shinnecock Hills went hiking in Sears Bellows County Park on Monday. They lost their way and called Southampton Town Police, who commenced a search. Patrol units and the community response unit responded and met Suffolk County Park Rangers at the park’s main entrance on Bellows Pond Road in Hampton Bays.

Considering the park’s size and the frigid temperatures Monday, police deployed unmanned drones to aid in the search.

Southampton Town Police’s communications division reached their hikers on a cellphone, and they described where they were. An officer familiar with the layout of the park was able to pinpoint their locale, police said, and the two outdoorsmen were found, and taken back to their cars, cold, and unharmed.
