Lou Remkus, president of The Remkus Group and life-long resident of Sag Harbor, died on Christmas Eve, December 24. He was 76.
Remkus was born in Southampton on March 31, 1945, to Louis and Margie Remkus. He graduated from Pierson High School, where he played baseball and basketball and where — according to his mother — he gave his teachers a run for their money. He played softball for decades after high school, and his daughter loved the chance to stay up late and cheer for him and his brother during double-headers at Mashashamuet Park. Remkus also loved playing golf, never missed a chance to go out on the water, and was known for calling fans of competing teams to gloat whenever his Yankees or Giants took the lead.
Remkus started his own insurance and financial planning business in the ’70s, when he, along with his partner MaryLou (Remkus) Hartman, faithfully served friends and clients for decades. An excellent chef, he enjoyed good company, fine wine, and the richest of foods. He was a devoted son, loving father, and a doting grandfather who always had a ready laugh, loved the Lord, and lived life to the fullest.
He is survived by his daughter, Julieann and son-in-law, Jason Brazeal; as well as his granddaughters, Catheryn, Hanna, Becca, and Sara. He was predeceased by his mother, Margie; and brother, Terry.
Visiting hours were held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home on January 7, a service was held at St. Andrews Church on January 8, followed by a burial and reception.
