Louis R. Leno

Louis R. Leno of Hampton Bays died on June 15. He was 78 years old.

Named by his mother after famed author Robert Louis Stevenson, Mr. Leno was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and moved to Floral Park when he was young. A graduate of Saint Hedwig’s Grammar School in Floral Park, he was always proud of his Polish heritage and his Roman Catholic faith.

After moving to Mineola as a teenager, he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann, at Mineola High School. Following his graduation in 1951, he entered the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for four years, mostly on the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Valley Forge.

While still in the Navy, he married Barbara Ann in 1955. He completed college in 1959 and started his career as a micro-electronics engineer. Soon after, he found his true happiness as a carpenter and handyman for the Village of Mineola. He worked for the village for more than 27 years with a cheerfulness and a warm smile that became his trademark.

Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Leno moved to their home in Hampton Bays, where he enjoyed fishing, golfing and the daily crossword puzzle. A talented musician, he was known to entertain his family and friends with a polka on his accordion and on the dance floor. He will be remembered for his love and dedication to his family and friends, and for his fun loving sense of humor, survivors said.

Mr. Leno is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Ann; his sister, Loretta Baughan and her husband Rich; six children, Marc and his wife Maryalice, Deirdre Finley and her husband Richard, LuAnn Listl and her husband Martin, Keith, Kevin and his wife Lisa, and David and his wife Terri. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Madeline, Andrew, Brett (Listl), Travis, Danielle, Daniel, Ryan and Sean; and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends at R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A funeral Mass was held on June 19 at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays.

Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School, 160 North Main, Southampton, NY 11968.

In the Hamptons, late spring and early summer are full of possibilities. And by possibilities I mean new restaurants. We have a steady turnover of restaurants in the East End, because restaurateuring is hard. There’s no margin in food. Rents are high. It’s difficult to get experienced staff. But you know all this. You’ve seen “The Bear.” I haven’t. “The Bear” is too stressful and nerve-wracking for me. I prefer to watch this shirtless guy on my Instagram who bakes cakes and let’s his pug lick the spoon. The guy’s abs are rock hard, and he cracks eggs on them. ... by Tracy Grathwohl
