Lucy M. Cuomo, a lifelong resident of Amagansett, died at her daughter’s home in East Hampton on October 23. She was 89.
Born December 12, 1923, in Amagansett, to Stefano and Saveria Napolillo, she attended Amagansett School and East Hampton High School. During high school, she worked at the Bulova Watchcase Factory in Sag Harbor.
She married James Cuomo just before he left to fight in World War II, leaving from Washington State. She stayed and worked at Republic, an aviation firm helping the war effort, making bullets for the war. While working at Republic, she invented a specialized work drawer for holding tools and supplies.
Dedicated to making a home for her family, Ms. Cuomo also was an avid golf player, winning many trophies and making first flight at the Sag Harbor Golf Club. She was also a member of the South Fork Country Club. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, jewelry-making, yoga and bowling. She was a member of the East Hampton YMCA where she went several times a week to work out.
Predeceased by her husband, James; she is survived by three children, Teresa English and Donna Cuomo of East Hampton, and James M. Cuomo of Amagansett; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. She is also survived by siblings, Stephen Napolillo of Amagansett, and Sue Cilli and Agnes Napolillo of Florida. She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Libert.
A wake was held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on October 25. A funeral Mass was said on October 26 at St. Peter’s Church in Amagansett; interment followed at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in East Hampton.
