Margaret D. Sullivan

Margaret D. Sullivan, died peacefully on October 4th, 2021 at the age of 80 in Southampton, NY. She is survived by sister, Kathryn Biggs (George N. Biggs III), brother, Thomas Dooley (Helen), five nephews, one niece and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Born in New Rochelle, NY, Marge was the oldest of three. Educated at Hunter College (BA)(Phi Beta Kappa, Summa cum Laude) followed by Columbia (MA), she then returned to teach English Literature at Hunter College for several years. Her love of interior design initiated a degree from Parsons School of Design and fueled the inception of Cause & Effect, a gift and home accessory shop, in Pelham, NY which she and her sister owned for over 20 years. Married for over 50 years to the late R. Peter Sullivan III, her devotion was remarkably selfless. Together they took great interest in their Springer Spaniels and the NY Rangers.

Marge was the ultimate philanthropist, when it came to her time, and served the Southampton Village community, and beyond, tirelessly. Near and dear to her heart was the Southampton History Museum (Chairman of the Board), the Southampton Garden Club (President), Garden Club of America, Foundation for Landscape Studies (Board Member), Battery Conservancy (Advisor)and the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons (Board Member). Marge had a profound understanding of the challenges for public gardening. Through her innate sense of creating “beauty in the garden” she made horticulture assessable for the masses. In New York City, Marge often brought people from varied backgrounds together to help on projects ranging from the creation of a green roof at a Common Ground Residence for the homeless, to the garden in Riverside Park, to the emerging volunteer program of the Carl Schurz Park Conservancy.

Marge was known for her kindness, openness and willingness to dig in and help those who asked. She mentored countless trustees, gardeners and volunteers over decades of serious dedication to community service.

“One of the kindest and most generous women I have ever known.” Was repeated by everyone who knew her. Service to be held at 11am on Monday, October 11th 2021 at St. Andrew’s Dune Church with a reception to follow at Rogers Mansion in Southampton.
