Margaret G. Stanton

Margaret G. Stanton of Quogue and Greenport and formerly of Greenwich, Connecticut, died at her home in Quogue on Wednesday, June 17. She was 85.

Known as “Bama” to her grandchildren and “Peggy” to her family and friends, Mrs. Stanton was born in New York City and attended the Nightingale Bamford School there and Rosemary Hall in Greenwich. She graduated in 1944 from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.

She got her first job in publicity at American President Lines in San Francisco in 1947, and later returned to New York City to work for Ruth Hammer Association in fashion publicity from 1949 to 1956.

Fluent in French, she was sent to the company’s Paris office where she became the publicity director for the fashion designer Hubert De Givenchy from 1952 to 1954. She continued her career in publicity working for Ley Renwick Realty in Bedford, New York, from 1970 to 1982. She received a New York State Real Estate License and worked for Quogue Realty Company from 1970 to 2002.

While raising two children in Greenwich, Connecticut, she enjoyed competing in platform tennis tournaments, winning four national women’s doubles championships from 1967 to 1970. Additionally, she won two national women’s platform tennis senior doubles titles in 1974 and 1977. She also served as the first female director and tournament director of the American Platform Tennis Association, for which she sought more women’s tournaments with bigger draws and better prizes. She was inducted into the APTA Hall of Fame in 1979.

Mrs. Stanton is survived by a son, David G. Stanton of Connecticut; a daughter, Sarah S. Lee of Sag Harbor; a sister, Elizabeth G. Donohue of Pennsylvania; a brother, Clinton Gilbert Jr. of Vermont and Florida; and six grandsons.

She was predeceased by her husband of 25 years, Charles C. Stanton.

A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, August 1, at 4 p.m. at the Stanton home at 3 Ocean Avenue in Quogue. Interment was private.
