Margot Straus Petrow of Manhattan and Southampton died at her Manhattan home on January 6, 2017, of lung cancer. She was 84.
A psychotherapist in private practice for many decades, she graduated from New York University, later earning her master’s in social work from the Hunter College School of Social Work. She also did advanced psychoanalytic training at the William Alanson White Institute. Survivors said that her family mattered the most and that her passions were her flower garden, social bridge, the stock market, and political activism. In the Vietnam era she was proud to call herself “Another Mother for Peace” and later, an “Old White Woman for Obama.”
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Richard; three children, Steven Petrow, Jay Petrow, and Julie Petrow-Cohen, and their spouses Jim Bean, Nancy Clarke, and Maddy Petrow-Cohen; and four grandchildren, William, Jessica, Anna and Caroline.
