Margretta Daley Webb of Remsenburg and Manhattan died at her Remsenburg home on September 2, nearly a month after celebrating her 99th birthday.
Born August 5, 1910, in Orange, New Jersey, to George and Mary (née Barry) Daley, she was affectionately known as “Peggy” to close family members.
During World War II, she volunteered with the Red Cross as a hospital aide. Later her interests took her to New York City, where she worked for a well-known attorney as a legal secretary and became involved with the Drama League and the Republican Club.
Family members said this week that she loved to travel and that her trips to Cape Cod and other exotic ports of call with her husband, Burton, were very special to her.
Many of her friends, who knew her as “Rusty,” this week recalled her cheerfulness, optimism and zest for gardening and volunteering at the local Bide-A-Wee animal shelter. They also said she had a fondness for a good joke and hearty laugh. She loved life until the very end, survivors added, and was much loved and will be missed by all.
She is survived by four nephews, Dr. Jack Childs of Rhode Island, Peter Childs of Massachusetts, Bruce Childs of New Mexico and Felix Childs of California. In addition to her husband, Burton M. Webb, she was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude; a nephew, Robert Childs; and a niece, Mary Childs Fulton.
A funeral mass was held on September 9 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Westhampton Beach, followed by interment at the Remsenburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, PO Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
