Maria Elena Silvestri Rovegno, born in Brooklyn, died on December 31. She was 78.

She grew up in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where she attended Queen of All Saints Elementary School, St. Angela Hall Academy, and earned her bachelor’s degree at St. Joseph’s College for Women, where she had also attended the Early Childhood Lab School as a pre-schooler. She earned a master’s degree in fine arts from CUNY Brooklyn College, and began her career as an early childhood educator at the More Effective School/Head Start Program at P.S. 307 in Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn, moving on to become the director of the Early Childhood Children’s Program at CUNY Brooklyn College.

She later became a successful real estate broker with Douglas Elliman’s Port Washington and Manhasset offices for 33 years, where she built a community of clients who became dear friends.

Her larger than life personality is legend. She left an indelible and joyous impression of her extraordinary spirit on everyone in her beloved community.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Rovegno; son, Christopher Rovegno; daughter, Mia Rovegno; grandson Stefano Rovegno; her two dear sisters, Patricia Silvestri and Roberta Pantle (John); and her nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Spectrum Enterprises and Port Washington Children’s Center.

A memorial service was held at Fairchild Sons Funeral Chapel in Manhasset on January 13.
