Marie Lina Quantrell, a longtime resident of North Sea, died of cancer on October 1. She was 93.
Born on May 21, 1921, she was one of the first female lifeguards at Jones Beach and performed in the water ballet there. She worked for Newsday for 30 years as an editor, from the paper’s inception when it was run out of a garage. She was an accomplished watercolor painter and enjoyed singing with the Sweet Adelines, a barber shop quartet.
She is survived by two daughters, Leslie Hanning Fromm and Melissa Gettling; two grandsons, Corey Hanning Fromm and Christopher Gettling; and a son-in-law, Erik Hanning Fromm.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton.
