Marie Louise Thompson of Speonk died at the McPeak’s Assisted Living Facility in Patchogue on October 7. She was 95.
Ms. Thompson was born in Brooklyn on September 2, 1918, to Ellen Haddocks Leach and Walter Alexander Leach. She grew up and attended grammar and high school in Brooklyn. She met and married DeLacy Thorne and they had three children, Robert, Richard and Ramon. Ms. Thompson had a strong sense of family and was always involved in each of her children’s lives, whether it concerned school activities or social events, survivors said. Of major importance to her was St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn; her sewing skills were greatly appreciated by the church as she sewed and maintained the garments for all the altar boys.
As her children grew, Ms. Thompson worked for several banks and was always thought of as a valued employee. She was a social person and part of a long-standing and tight-knit group of friends, called Guys and Gals and also The Hermits, that hosted many social events and also traveled together on vacation.
Ms. Thompson and her first husband built a small weekend house in Speonk in the mid-1950s and worked hard turning it into their summer home. They hosted parties and social events that many people remembered for years afterward.
After her first husband’s death in 1969, Ms. Thompson married Charles A. Thompson. They retired to Speonk in the mid-1980s and spent many happy years there surrounded by family and friends. They were both active parishioners at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach, also serving as members of the Altar Guild and the Vestry.
She lived out her final days at McPeak’s Assisted Living Facility in Patchogue, where she served as president of the Resident Council and spent her days reading and playing bingo. She once said, “I’ve always tried to love the people my children have chosen to love.” She was a special person and mother, whose grace and goodness touched the lives of all whose paths she crossed, according to her family.
Ms. Thompson is survived by her three sons, Robert of East Moriches, Richard and wife Lesley of New York City and Speonk, and Ramon and wife Margaret of Speonk; four grandchildren, Zoe, Eric, Elektra and Alyssa; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Sasha. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 2010; and a grandson, Ramon, in 2000.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 9. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
Memorial donations in Ms. Thompson’s name can be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 40 Main Street, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
