Marion Elizabeth Smith of East Quogue died on April 1 at the Westhampton Care Center. She was 95.
Ms. Smith was born on December 3, 1920, in Greenport to William Gaffga and Martha Berry. She married Frank Smith on September 19, 1942, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. After her husband’s service, they moved to East Quogue, next door to the firehouse.
In 1966, Ms. Smith began working at the East Quogue Post Office until retiring in 1986. She then moved to Eutawville, South Carolina, where she remained until 2009, moving back to New York due to failing health. She lived at the Arbor West Assisted Living facility in Islandia until entering Westhampton Care Center for rehabilitation.
Ms. Smith was a former manager of the Western Union office in Greenport. She was a former member of the Daughters of America in Greenport and a charter member and past vice president and president of the East Quogue Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She was an active member of the East Quogue United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
Survivors said she was a loving and caring person, who enjoyed reading, birdwatching and playing bingo, poker and Wii bowling. She was a graduate of the adult continuing education program at Arbor West, excelling in history and English classes.
Predeceased by her husband, Frank L. Smith; and a daughter, Patricia J. Cichanowicz, she is survived by two children, William F. Smith and wife Maria Hudson Smith of Southampton and Lynn S. Payne and husband George of East Quogue; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Payne, George Payne, Diana M. Smith, Kyle E. Smith, Margaret Rochford, Susanne Simmons and Cathy Cichanowicz; five great-grandchildren, Brittany Rochford, Shawn Rochford, Jonathan Cichanowicz, Eric Cichanowicz and Alexandra Cichanowicz.
Visiting was held on April 5 at J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. The Reverend Lillian Hertel, pastor of the Hampton Bays United Methodist Church, officiated at a funeral at the funeral home.
