Marjorie Brumsey of Southampton died on June 10. She was 82.

Ms. Brumsey was born February 24, 1939, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Claude Bright Jr. and Annie Harper Bright. She attended Currituck Union School in North Carolina where she met George Brumsey Jr.

On July 27, 1957, the couple was united in marriage. Soon after their union, they relocated to Southampton, where they spent 61 years together in the community.

She was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family, her family said. She always wanted the best for her family, whether it was continuing their education or joining the military. She found time to attend her children’s and grandchildren’s events, football games, basketball games and track meets. She loved cooking, shopping and did whatever was necessary to make her family happy, her family noted.

She also loved traveling, they said. Every Memorial Day holiday, she would look forward to the annual trip to Elizabeth City, North Carolina to attend the family reunion.

Ms. Brumsey was a member of the Community Baptist Church and served as an usher for many years.

In her early days, she worked at Row Industries in Sag Harbor. She retired from Southampton Hospital after 29 years of service.

She was predeceased by her husband and her sons, George Brumsey III and Billy Brumsey. She is survived by her daughters, Daphne Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnette Brumsey of Jonesboro, Georgia; her sons, Curtis Brumsey (Yvette) of Saint Louis, Rodney Brumsey of Southampton and Ronnie Brumsey (Demetrice) of Ridge; her mother-in-law Janie Brumsey of Southampton; 11 grandchildren, Algina Brumsey of Louisville, Dorthea Brumsey of Nashville, Deshawn Brumsey of Orlando, Darron Brumsey of Palo Alto, Shanena Brumsey of Riverhead, Travaun Brumsey of Coram, Ronnie Brumsey Jr. of Ridge, Tylia Brumsey of East Point, Georgia, Marcus Brumsey of San Clemente, Myia DaCosta of Jonesboro, Georgia, and Dontae Brumsey of Port Jefferson; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A home-going service was held Friday, June 18, at Community Baptist Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Southampton Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

SOUTHAMPTON VILLAGE — Matthew Kopoulos, 34, of East Hampton was arrested by Village Police on December 2 and charged with petit larceny and unlawfully fleeing an officer, both misdemeanors, stemming from a September 25 incident in which police say Kopoulos stole items from the 7-Eleven on North Sea Road and then fled the scene on an e-bike. Love in Action

On behalf of the Hamptons United Methodist Church, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors and dedicated volunteers who made this year’s free community Thanksgiving dinner a remarkable success. Because of your kindness, we were able to serve nearly 500 of our neighbors — families, seniors, workers and individuals from all walks of life — by providing a holiday meal for their table. For the sixth year in a row, we are also deeply indebted to our fearless leader, Denise Smith-Meacham. A Day of Quiet

November 27, Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. Morning: I hear the screech owl, the great-horned owl, the Cooper’s hawk, Carolina wren, white-throated sparrow, chirps of the cardinal, red-breasted nuthatch, the cooo of the mourning dove; songs of rooster, flicker, dark-eyed junco. Titmouse, blue jay. Wind, barely a breeze, whispers haaaaaaaa in wind language, lovingly. Tranquility. Peace. I’m alive — ping of chill in the air, my skin zings. This sacred silence is why I moved here 40 years ago. But it’s completely gone now. And why? Was our designation of “green community” just a photo-op? A lie? Words co-opted like the phrase ... by Staff Writer
