Former Southampton resident Mary F. Majkowski of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, died at her home on July 8. She was 94.
Born in Calverton in 1914 to Felicia (née Staszzko) and John Flak, she married Edward Majkowski and the two resided in Southampton where they raised their family.
Mrs. Majkowski was an active member of Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton for many decades. She also belonged to the church’s Rosary Society, and served as its treasurer, the Ladies Guild and the Altar Society. She helped prepare children for their First Holy Comunion and taught Sunday School. Once the Our Lady of the Hamptons Catholic School was built, she and her husband were active as volunteers on bingo nights in support of the school.
An active member of her community, Mrs. Majkowski also served as a volunteer at Southampton Hospital for 19 years. Fluent in Polish, she was a welcome sight to many of the Polish people in the community.
After her children went to college, Mrs. Majkowski worked for Southampton Federal Savings, now Astoria Federal Savings Bank. She started as a teller and worked her way up to the equivalent of a loan manager. She retired from the bank in 1976.
Mrs. Majkowski is survived by two children, Jon and his wife Bernadette Majkowski of Connecticut and Marylin Kelly of Ohio and five grandchildren, Edward, David, Scott, Matt and Brian. In addition—as a supporter of foster children through the Foster Parents Mission for more than 40 years—she is survived by two “adopted” grandchildren, TJ and Conrad.
Her husband, with whom she shared more than 60 years of marriage, predeceased her in October of 2000.
Visitation was held on July 10 at the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton, followed by an evening prayer service also at O’Connell. Funeral services were held on July 11 at Our Lady of Poland Church in Southampton. Interment was at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
