Mary Margaret Seymore Barrington died on June 18 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, after a long illness. She was 68.
Born February 27, 1941, to Cassie Owens and George Seymore Sr., she was educated in Currituck, North Carolina. She moved to New York and in 1960 married Wallace Barrington Jr.
Mrs. Barrington was employed by the Southampton Town Nutrition Center in Bridgehampton, where she worked as a cook for 17 years.
She joined the Community Baptist Church in Southampton and was a faithful choir member and a devoted Christian who loved to sing, often representing the church with a heartfelt solo. Also known as “Molly,” “Kate,” Hot Dog,” “Granny,” “Grandma,” or “Ma,” she was an awesome mother, survivors said this week, and she led by example. A great cook, she fed many, they added, noting that she had a hearty, contagious laugh, never treated anyone like a stranger, and will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
She is survived by a daughter, Arlena Barrington-Morgan and her husband Carl Morgan of Southampton; three sons, Leonard Barrington of Southampton, Wallace Barrington and his wife Brendalyn of Water Mill and Shawn Barrington and his wife Kathleen of Shirley; a sister, Gladys Wilson of Southampton; a brother, George Seymore, Jr. of Southampton; and three sisters-in-law, Anne Whidbee and Shirley Woodley (Ransom) of North Carolina; and Mary Louise (Freddie) of Brooklyn.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, LaKeeya, Kevin, Natasha, Andrew, Michael, Brieanna, Tré, Shawn Jr., Shemar, Dante and Dávonte; six great-grandchildren, Jordan, KaShawn, Kayden, Avery, Arielle and Tanaya; an adopted granddaughter, Tunica West; a special friend, Barbara Ann Dozier; several aunts; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband of 45 years, Wallace Barrington Jr., she was predeceased by a brother, William Herman Seymore, and a daughter, Erlena Michelle Barrington.
A viewing was held on June 21 at Community Baptist Church in Southampton. Funeral services were held on June 22, also at the Baptist Church, with the Reverend Donald E. Butler officiating. Interment followed at Southampton Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were Leonard, Wallace and Shawn Barrington, Marvin McMillan, Andrew Porrata, and Eddie West. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
