Mary V. Gallagher

Mary V. Gallagher of Westhampton Beach died on February 18 from complications of cancer. She was 77.

She graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich in 1952 and from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania in 1956.

Ms. Gallagher was a longtime resident with early and strong ties to the Westhampton Country Club. As a teenager, she served as a counselor for the Junior Sports Program while vacationing with her parents, Howard and Mary Seitz, at their summer residence on Beach Lane in Westhampton Beach.

As a member of the Westhampton Country Club, herself, for more than 40 years, she served two terms as a member of the Board of Governors and at the time of her death was a member of the Admissions Committee. She was an excellent competitor who enjoyed golf. She was the Ladies Club Champion 10 times between 1981 and 1999, with four consecutive wins from 1987 to 1990, a feat never accomplished by another member in the 123-year history of the club.

Ms. Gallagher represented the club as part of the team that competed annually in the Tri Club Matches against Maidstone and Shinnecock. She was a member of the Women’s Golf Association of Long Island, serving as the Westhampton Country Club representative.

She raised her family in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and was a member of the Arcola Golf Club in Paramus, New Jersey, winning the club’s Ladies Club Championship three times.

She established her summer residence in Quogue in 1975 and after her family was grown, she spent the bulk of her time there. She was a sales associate for Town and Country Real Estate and Phillips Beach Realty, both in Westhampton Beach. She also served Suffolk County, the Town of Southampton and the Village of Quogue by helping on Election Day at poll locations to assist in the voting process. She was active in her church, Immaculate Conception on Quiogue, helping as eucharistic minister and in assisting in counting the regular Sunday collections. She also volunteered as a bereavement counselor for East End Hospice.

Ms. Gallagher is survived by a brother, Howard Gerald Seitz; her husband, Edward; and four children, Kevin of Massachusetts, Susan Wolters and husband Chris of Connecticut, Martha Segreti and husband John of Maryland, and Deirdre Williams and husband Gael of California. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary V., in 1977.

A memorial service is being planned for this summer at the Surf Club in Quogue, where she was a member for many years and enjoyed spending her time.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.

The Final Step

As Southampton Town considers aggressive action on sand mines, with plans to use amortization — a tool last used effectively to rid the town of nightclubs and bars the town considered nuisances — to finally end the practice, it’s important to cut through the rhetoric and state some facts. Sand mines serve a clear purpose and have economic value in a region where construction is a primary driver. But the town quite simply does not allow sand mining — that decision was made years ago, and what mines exist today are preexisting and nonconforming. Amortizing the properties is the last ... 11 Dec 2024 by Editorial Board
