Merrill E. Ryder Of Quogue Dies February 18

Merrill E. Ryder of Quogue died on February 18 in El Mirage, Arizona. He was 94.

Mr. Ryder and his wife of 72 years, Clara Mae, had spent most of their winters in El Mirage for the past 12 years. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 1st Infantry, known as the “Big Red One” and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 5250. He later established Bradie Mower Service Co. in Bellport, NY, and Bradie Lawn Sprinkler Co., run by his sons, Merrill and Matthew. He was an avid ham radio operator and a participant in national civil defense efforts. He enjoyed reading, walking, bike riding and spending time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Merrill E. Ryder Sr. and Marion V. Ryder of Eastport; and an infant son, Marshall. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Retired Commander William Ryder of Florida; five children, Marion Estes, Marilyn Miles, Merrill Ryder, Martin Ryder and Matthew Ryder; a cousin, George Nesbitt; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on February 26. A funeral service was held at Eastport Gospel Church on February 27, followed by interment at the East Quogue Cemetery.
