Michael G. Conroy of Southampton, formerly of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, died at Southampton Hospital on October 26, from complications relating to pulmonary fibrosis. He was 77.
Born on November 15, 1938, in Detroit, to Evelyn and Leo Conroy, he grew up in Bloomfield Hills, where he attended Birmingham High School. Throughout his professional career, he had also resided in Cleveland, London and Manhattan.
Mr. Conroy graduated from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature, as well as from the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. He was the publisher at Newsweek Atlantic, covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and the president of the U.S. division of the International Herald Tribune. After a brief hiatus indulging in his well-known passion for golf, he joined Sotheby’s International Realty where he was a senior global real estate advisor.
Golf was ever-present in his life. His father was a respected pro at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, and Mr. Conroy was club champion in 1962 on the famed South Course, known as “the Monster.” He was a founder member of the board of directors at the National Golf Links of America and served as chairman of the Green Committee. He was also a member of the International Advertising Association. He had a passion for art collecting and could often be spotted at various antique shops around the East End of Long Island.
Mr. Conroy was predeceased by a brother, John Conroy. He is survived by many close friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, at noon at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
