Michael Joseph Batky of Sag Harbor died on April 9 at Capitol Caring Hospice in Arlington, Virginia. He was 66 years old.
Mr. Batky was born in Southampton Hospital on February 6, 1955 to Joseph and Anne (Nancie) Batky of North Haven. He grew up in the idyllic Sag Harbor community of the 1950s and ’60s surrounded by many cousins (Reidys and O’Briens), friends and neighbors.
He attended Pierson High School, where he starred in soccer until he was severely injured when struck by an automobile. After graduating in 1974, Mr. Batky studied commercial art at Sullivan County Community College, focusing on woodwork and photography.
Mr. Batky moved to northern Virginia in 1978. He eventually settled in Falls Church, where he worked for the City of Falls Church for nearly 30 years. As a Civil War enthusiast, he enjoyed the many battlefields in the region and the rich local history. After he retired, Mr. Batky pursued his lifelong love of dogs with a part-time dog-walking business. He always remained a Sag Harborite at heart.
Mr. Batky is survived by two brothers, Jeff Batky of Sag Harbor and Bob Batky of Bethesda, Maryland; and two nephews, Brett and Scott Batky, both in the Washington, D.C., area.
