In the early years on the racetrack in Riverhead, spending time with his family on their boat on Moriches Bay, or utilizing his favorite tractor on the so called “Back 40.”

Quick with a mischievous smile and a chuckle, his family said, a twinkle in his eye was always evident when some hijinks was in the offing.

Mr. Goss was a longtime supporter of the Eastport Fire Department, where he volunteered for 57 years, acquiring the rank of captain on the Seatuck Engine Company.

The huge hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved Mike will never be filled, his family said. He was affectionately called G-PA by his grandchildren and great-children.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette of nearly 54 years; his daughters Pam (Phil), Adrienne (Carl) and Heather (Rich); his younger brother Peter (Veronica); his sister Suzie; his grandchildren Heather, Andrea, Quentin, and Leah; his great-grandchildren Collin and Cayden; and his nieces and nephews, Jay, Joey, Danny, Jessica, Artie and Keith.

He was predeceased by his brother Gerald and sister-in-law Julie; his brother-in-law Arthur; and his nephew Jimmy.

In accordance with his wishes, his family noted, Mr. Goss’s ashes will be spread across the sea, at a later date. His family shared the message: “Tebe kokhaly, you were loved.”

Memorial donations to the Eastport Fire Department Benevolent Association, 21 Union Ave., Eastport, NY 11941, would be appreciated by the family.

Turkeys and Eagles

The turkey is the loudest thing in the predawn hours. A “gobble” descriptor does not come close to capturing his overture. From the distant darkness, it’s no songbird tuning-in when the turkey lets loose his call. So much like the bird itself, it’s a big and a slightly comical noise, followed then by a long silence.
