A $1 million lottery ticket was sold at a gas station in Hampton Bays last week, although the winner has yet to claim his or her winnings.
The ticket, which was sold at the Shell gas station Canoe Place Fuel Mart near the intersection of East Montauk Highway and Canoe Place Road, was a second-place winner in last Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, along with eight other winners in various states.
According to a lottery official in Albany, the winnings have not yet been claimed, and the ticket holder has a calendar year to do so, although the full 365-day period is rarely utilized.
Lottery spokeswoman Christy Calicchia said it’s not unusual, however, for winners to wait several weeks to claim their prizes, as many opt to consult financial advisers prior to getting their money. “It’s not unusual to seek professional advice,” she said. “It’s actually something we encourage.”
During the same drawing, a $2 million-winning Powerplay ticket was sold in a Brooklyn grocery store as well, according to the New York State Lottery website, www.nylottery.ny.gov.
