Miriam F. Hedges died at the home of her daughter Ruth Guyer in Sagaponack on March 28. She was 96.

Born on December 2, 1915, in Southold to Frances and Edwin Fickeissen, “Mim,” as she was known, attended two years of high school before she married at age 15 and started raising a family. While her nine children were growing up, she was a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, and held many different offices at the United Methodist Church. She did sewing alterations for people in the village, made baked goods for a shop in the village, sold Christmas cards and was active in the Homemakers Club. Family members were often the recipients of handmade clothes, dolls, afghans and many more items handcrafted by Mrs. Hedges.

She also volunteered to drive people to the Blind Center, until she could no longer drive, but continued to serve as the group’s secretary. For the last years of her life, she enjoyed activities as part of the Red Hat Society. At age 95, in 2011, she moved out of her home of 79 years and into her daughter Ruth’s home in Sagaponack.

Mrs. Hedges was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Allen Hedges, in 1981; her daughter, Florence Lanz, in 2008; her son-in-law, Albert Lanz, in 2007; daughter-in-law, Helen Hedges, in 2008; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Hedges, in 2010; and son-in-law, Fred Guyer, in 2010. She is survived by eight children, Edwin and Albert of Bridgehampton; Ruth Guyer of Sagaponack; Margaret (and Lenard Makowski) of Jamesport, Eugene (and Caroline) of Washington; Dave (and Denise) of Texas; T. William (and Barbara) and John (and Christine) of Arizona; 26 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Interment of Mrs. Hedges’s ashes was at Edgewood Cemetery in Bridgehampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 3, at the Bridgehampton United Methodist Church.
