A portion of Montauk Highway was closed between Deerfield Road and Scuttle Hole Road in Water Mill after a car struck a utility pole, which then fell across the road, on Tuesday morning.
The single-car accident occurred at approximately 8:21 a.m., according to Southampton Town Police.
Detective Lieutenant James Kiernan said on Wednesday that the driver of the 2012 Jeep fell asleep while heading west on Montauk Highway and crashed into the pole. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment.
Montauk Highway was closed in both directions from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police, while the pole was removed.
