More Big Storage Coming To East Hampton

As a nearly 40,000-square-foot storage facility to be operated by the PODS storage container company takes shape on an Industrial Road property, another—nearly twice as large—is in the planning stages.

Twin Forks Moving & Storage has proposed building a new 46,200-square-foot self-storage building—with a full basement for car storage that will bring the total square feet of usable space to more than 70,000—on one of the two lots it leases from East Hampton Town on Industrial Road.

The new building will have a footprint of 250 feet by 110 feet by 22 feet tall, and will have about 550 self-storage units in the two above-ground floors, with elevators and hallways for access.

Twin Forks took over the former Wainscott Studios movie sound stage on Industrial Road, next to LTV, three years ago and converted the 23,700-square-foot building into a bulk storage facility. The plans for the new buildings include a renovation of that building and another to increase bulk storage capacity.

But the new building, which will not be as tall as the 50-foot-high soundstage, will be the company’s first self-storage facility, an addition that company founder Chris Denon says is an important one for him.

“With the bulk storage, we pack everything and wrap everything and bring it to the warehouse and seal and label it,” Mr. Denon said. “Most self-storage people will still have the moving company do that, but they like to have a key so they know they can go in there and get their hair dryer if they want to.”

Mr. Denon said he hopes to be able to start construction by the end of the summer.

Twin Forks pays $110,000 a year for the lease of the 4.6-acre property at 77 Industrial Road. PODS pays the town $90,000 per year for its lease of a 2.5-acre parcel just up the street.
