An article on September 16 reported the good news that the Southampton Town Community Preservation Fund “surpasses $1 billion” in taxes raised since its inception in 1998 [“Southampton CPF Surpasses $1 Billion,” Residence, September 16].
It would have been more informative if your reporter had asked Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman how much of the $1 billion has been spent to date. Also, how much money is raised but unspent? Where is the money invested? What return are taxpayers getting on the unspent and invested money? Who is responsible for investing these large sums?
There is a lot more to this story than just repeating the supervisor’s “good news” announcement.
