Traffic heading east on Sunrise Highway, east of County Road 111 in Eastport, was diverted on Tuesday because of a multi-vehicle accident.State Police said the accident happened around 1 p.m. in the eastbound lanes. As late as 4:20 p.m., the main artery to the East End was still closed. On Wednesday morning, police said they did not know what time the highway had opened back up.According to police, a dump truck ran off the roadway and into a wooded area off the right shoulder when one of its tires blew out. The accident closed the right lane and caused traffic to back up.A short time later, a tractor-trailer being driven by Noah Kuloglu, 54, of East Northport, approached the stopped traffic but was unable to slow down in time, police said, striking several vehicles that were stopped.Mr. Kuloglu's truck came to a final resting place in the woods on the right shoulder.The drivers of two vehicles that Mr. Kuloglu drove into, as well as the driver of the dump truck, were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.A total of five vehicles were involved in the accident, according to police.State Police did not share any additional details about the accident.
