Muriel E. Barzelay
Muriel E. Barzelay, 91, died at home in Southampton on Wednesday, January 26, having chosen not to be treated for an advanced cancer that was diagnosed in November.
A graduate of Radcliffe College, she was active in the reform political movement in Syracuse beginning in the 1950s, and during the 1960s served as a vice chair of the New York State Democratic Party. While she maintained her interest in politics throughout her life, she spent many happy hours tending her garden and also pursued a wide range of intellectual and artistic interests; family was the true center of her life.
For 67 years she shared a devoted and loving partnership with her husband, Professor Martin E. Barzelay, until his death in 2009. She will be remembered not only for her strength of character and uncompromising intellect, but for also for her unceasing kindness and thoughtfulness, survivors said.
She is survived by her son, Douglas of Manhattan and Southampton; a sister, Elenore Freedman of New Hampshire; and a brother Dr. Robert Stein of Georgia.
Funeral arrangements were under direction of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 5, at Parrish Memorial Hall in Southampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be appreciated by the family.
