Nancy Herman of Southampton died on August 15. She was 74.

She resided in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Growing up with her siblings, Gary and Susan Herman, in Southampton, she enjoyed spending time with her loved ones and friends. She grew up and graduated from Southampton High School. A long-term resident of Southampton Village, she moved to Florida in 2016.

She and her sister were avid lovers of the bays and ocean. They spent time clamming and enjoying their summers on the veranda in Southampton under the easy night sky. After her sister died, she moved to Florida.

Her father, Edwin “Red” Herman, served on the Southampton Fire Department for 50 years. Her family was long-standing community members serving in the fire department and police department.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in the literary community. She loved renting books and DVDs from Rogers Memorial Library on Windmill Lane.

Her memory will forever live on trips to Meadow Lane to fetch fresh clams to make Manhattan clam chowder under her mother Carol Herman’s guarded recipe.

She is survived by her son Wesley Schultheis; nieces Faye Hilbert and Dana Hilbert; and nephews Seth Hilbert and Ryland Hilbert. She was predeceased by her beloved adopted dog Phoebe of 13 years.

The Downtown Dilemma

Last week, an Express Sessions event in Sag Harbor focused on the village’s shopping district and explored a puzzle: If last summer was the busiest ever, and the streets of Sag Harbor were, by all accounts, packed on most every day and evening, why were the owners of shops on Main Street and elsewhere in the business district reporting a down year? The answers are elusive, complicated — and, in many ways, universal to every downtown shopping district on the South Fork, from Montauk to Eastport: Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Water Mill, Amagansett, East Hampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays. ... by Editorial Board
