Nancy Pierce Williamson of Southampton died on February 23, 2018.
Ms. Williamson was born on March 16, 1938. She was a retired journalist having worked for Time-Life in New York City for 39 years, straight out of college. Her first assignment was as a junior reporter at Sports Illustrated, followed by various writing assignments at Time magazine, before joining the start-up staff at People magazine, as a writer-reporter and rising to chief of reporters at People before retiring in 1998. She was a 1959 graduate of Northwestern University.
She traveled the world on business covering Winter Olympics in Austria, France and Japan, and wrote an award-winning cover story on women in sports. She also co-authored with William Johnson, “Whatta-gal”: The Babe Didrikson Story” in 1977. While at People magazine, she was sent to Sydney, Australia, to help launch the People’s Australian sister-publication, Who.
Retiring to her seashore home in Southampton, she enjoyed her neighbors, local fishing, golf and long walks on the beach with her beloved yellow lab companion, Rudder.
Her philanthropic interests included the Hopkins School in New Haven, Connecticut, Rogers Memorial Library, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and the Southampton Animal Shelter.
Ms. Williamson is survived by 10 nephews and nieces, including her brother Reg Pierce’s seven children (Reginald III, Crawford, Polly, MacGregor, Winston, Sarah and Cindy) and her second brother Roger Pierce’s three children (Roger Jr., Tyler and Nancy).
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton.
Memorial donations may be made to the Barbara H. Lord Regional Dialysis Center in Hampton Bays and/or to The Olde Towne Animal Hospital in Southampton.
