Kevin Patrick Fitzgerald of Hampton Bays died on June 14, after a courageous battle with illness. He was 77. He was born on April 14, 1948, in Rockaway Beach. In 1970, he married Mary Frank Fitzgerald in Freeport. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in love, creativity, and shared purpose. A couple of friends and I went out for Cuban food, and we decided to share our entrees. One friend chose the camarones enchilados, described on the menu as shrimp in a spicy creole sauce with wine. It was delicious — except the chef left the tail shells on the camarones. Ugh! I had to stick my fingers into the spicy creole sauce with wine, pick up the tail and bite into the shrimp in such a way as to pull all the meat out of the shell. It has come to my attention that there is an effort afoot to move our beloved college windmill off our campus, where it has resided for many decades [“New Push To Move Southampton’s Oldest Windmill From College Campus Back to Village,” 27east.com, June 11]. There are approximately 10,000 Southampton College alumni. We have contributed to the area since 1963. It has been my privilege to have served as your village trustee. I am proud of all I have helped accomplish, starting with upgrading our volunteer fire and ambulance department’s outdated and aging equipment and restoring the morale of these two most important organizations. I advocated for hiring additional police officers to focus on traffic. Our increased enforcement efforts have significantly reduced commuter cut-through traffic on Somerset, Bishops and Corrigan.
