Nellie Madeline Delury
Nellie Delury (née La Place) of Southampton died Thursday, April 21. She was 85.
Ms. Delury had many passions throughout her long and productive life. She married her loving husband John Patrick Delury in 1950. As a devoted wife and loving mother, she helped maintain a family of seven children. She was an avid gardener and would frequently sell her herbs and other produce to the local markets.
Ms. Delury was also a writer who contributed letters to The Southampton Press in the early 1990s. Her other passions included music, language and cooking. She would often entertain her family and friends by playing her organ, singing songs in many different languages, and playing her harmonica excitedly as she tapped her foot. Throughout the years she prepared and served holiday dinners.
Ms. Delury, who had a home in Florida as well as Southampton, has traveled to St. Barts and St. Thomas in the Carribbean. Her mother and father were born in the French West Indies region.
She is survived by her children, John “Jack” Delury, Patricia E. Delury, Elizabeth P. Zieler, William J. Delury, Dennis M. Delury, Mary A. May and Thomas P. Delury; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1997.
Visitation took place Monday, April 25, at O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, April 26, at Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
