Quogue Village Police Officer WilliamAlex Gladding was promoted to detective at a salary of $145,918 with a unanimous vote by the Village Board on December 19.

Det. Gladding joined the local force in 2014 as a part-time officer, coming on full time in 2016. He was thrice commended for exceptional service and named Officer of the Year in 2018 and 2019. He also received two commendations for life-saving actions.

A native Long Islander, Det. Gladding grew up in Rocky Point. He currently resides in the Town of Southampton.

Just days before the Village Board met to affirm Det. Gladding’s promotion, the tight knit community was rocked by the sudden death of Det. Michael Fruin.

Det. Fruin began his career with the Quogue Village Police in 1992 as a part-time police officer and one year later was appointed a full-time officer. In 2005, he was promoted to detective and went on to earn numerous department commendations and life-saving awards, and was named Officer of the Year three times.

“We remember Mike as a kind, generous, reliable, fun loving man who always saw the lighter side of most situations and who’s smile and laugh was contagious. Mike leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination and a tenacious investigative style that will be missed by us all,” Police Chief Christopher Isola said at a service held December 15.

“Before Detective Fruin’s passing, he and I often had conversations about his replacement,” Lieutenant Daniel Hartman recalled this week. He said his colleague clearly supported Det. Gladding’s moving into the detective office.

“The Fruin family was also aware of this sentiment, and in support of Detective Gladding. They all came to watch Detective Gladding get sworn in,” Lt. Hartman said.

“Alex was the easy choice for this position,” the lieutenant continued, explaining that Det. Gladding is known as Alex. “He puts in maximum effort every time he shows up, and his record clearly shows that. He has surely earned his title, and we are honored to have him in this new position.”
