New Scenic Park Coming

At the Water Mill Citizens Advisory Committee’s meeting last week, LaGuardia Design Group revealed — to unanimous appreciation — their comprehensive plan for the coming 10-acre Mill Creek Park [“Draft Design for Water Mill Park Debuts,” 27east.com, June 14]. The park will combine recently acquired parcels with the adjacent Settlers Field, and will provide water views alongside a quarter-mile stretch of Route 27, just to the east of Head of Pond Road.

Mill Creek connects Mill Pond to Mecox Bay, and is the home of the historic Water Mill Museum with its working water mill. A quarter-mile sidewalk will connect Mill Creek Park to the Parrish Art Museum.

This town acquisition was, from inception, envisioned to create a scenic vista alongside Route 27. The landscaped park most certainly will become known as the dramatic landmark gateway to the east end of Southampton and beyond. It will also preserve and protect 944 feet of sensitive waterfront leading to Mecox Bay.

Kudos to the LaGuardia Design Group for their creative, mindful plan. It incorporates meandering walking paths and docks for kayaks, which will be able to traverse under the highway into Mecox Bay. Great appreciation also goes to Tim Maran, who first conceived of this park, to the Burden family who agreed to the town purchase of their property, and to Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, Town Board members and administrators of the Community Preservation Fund who saw this opportunity and had the foresight to make it happen.
