The Suffolk County Water Authority has launched a project to bring new water mains in Wainscott on Wainscott-Northwest Road, South Breeze Drive and the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike.
The project, which is expected to be completed in August, will result in the installation of over 8,000 feet, or more than 1.5 miles, of new iron water main to connect different parts of the area’s distribution system, an effort to improve water service in Wainscott and better prepare the area to serve more residents.
“The expansion of our water mains system is crucial to SCWA’s ability to provide the high level of water service our customers deserve,” said SCWA Chairman Charles Lefkowitz in a press release. “By connecting different parts of this area’s distribution system, we are ensuring that they run as efficiently as possible while maintaining the integrity of the existing infrastructure.
“There is a lot of interest in connecting to our system but, we have been concerned about our ability to serve all these new connections. This project gets us prepared for an influx of new customers.”
Carolyn Logan Glock, the chair of the Wainscott Citizens Advisory Committee, called the project “wonderful news” for Wainscott and said that “it’s critical that as many residents as possible have access to the public water supply.”
In addition, the water authority is also working on a project to bring new public supply wells to Bull Path in Northwest Harbor. This is being done to allow more access and service to residents who currently use private wells, as private wells “can be impacted by harmful contaminants that frequently go undetected because residents are not required to test their wells,” according to the water authority.
