No Exceptions

I hope that neither the Southampton Village Board nor the Southampton Town Board will adopt what the town is considering as it explores banning gas-powered leaf blowers: making an exception for homeowners.

Although the idea is no doubt well-intentioned, these machines are as toxic on my lawn as they are on my neighbor’s lawn, and, in the view of many, their use should be prohibited across the board.

As for possible backlash from property owners who feel that what we do on our property is our own business, it bears remembering that we are not allowed to blast our music at any decibel we want at all hours, and we are no longer allowed to rake our leaves into piles and burn them, one of our favorite childhood pastimes in the village.

I hope our elected representatives will keep the highest common good in mind, for our residents and for our planet.
