Nona Snyder of Westhampton Beach Dies September 14

author on Sep 22, 2015

Nona Michelle Snyder of Westhampton Beach died on September 14 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She was 61.

Born on February 3, 1954, at St. Albans Hospital, she was a daughter of Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Edward W. Snyder, who died at age 97 earlier this year, as well as Maureen J. Snyder.

Survivors said Ms. Snyder will be remembered for her love for her parents and tremendous bond with her father, including the care she provided to him until his death in February. She was intelligent, educated, informed and accepting, they said, adding that family was important to her and that she made that clear through the family videos and photos she shared with all. A huge fan of Starbucks and Springsteen, she could often be found with a muffin, coffee and her iPhone, spending time at Goldberg’s deli, relaxing and chatting with the owners and regulars.

Having spent much time in Washington, D.C., earlier in her life, she remained very interested and informed around American politics and recently received a personal letter from President Barack Obama acknowledging the great contributions her father had made in his service to this country. She was an excellent writer and had shared her thoughts about her father with the president, never expecting a response.

As a child, Ms. Snyder lived in many unique locales including Colorado, on Hawaii and in Morocco, as well as on Long Island. She attended Southampton College and received a bachelor’s degree in education, summa cum laude. After her education, she built an interesting career in Washington, D.C., where she worked as staff in the House of Representatives, and later as part of the Reagan White House. She then went on to work for ABC News as a producer for “World News Tonight” and Peter Jennings. Later in her career she relocated to Connecticut, where she used her talents in marketing and business development for the March of Dimes, the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford and the Bruce Museum. More recently, she relocated to Westhampton Beach, where for several years she helped her mother care for her aging father, while also working part-time with youth as part of the Human Understanding and Growth Seminars (HUGS) organization.

She is survived by siblings, Edward W. Snyder Jr. and Melissa Goldberg and husband Barry; nephew, Joshua Sonny Goldberg; and great-nephew, Gavin Sonny Goldberg; and many relatives and friends.

A wake was held at the Follett & Werner Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach on September 17, followed by a funeral Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Quiogue on September 18. Burial was at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Memorial donations may be made to HUGS, 108 Mill Road, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Police were called, but as one town official pointed ... 1 May 2024 by Editorial Board

Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits. When a retiree already receiving taxpayer-funded health care goes back ... by Staff Writer

State Sets Aside Funding for Affordable Housing at College Campus

The State Legislature on April 22 approved Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for $600 million in funding for several affordable housing programs, including one that would permit the construction of such units on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. But the celebration has to be put on hold for now, according to Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., because a related bill that would authorize the actual expenditure of the allocated funds has yet to pass. Thiele said he was optimistic that authorization bill could be passed before the end of the session on June 6. “The legislature had a lot of questions,” ... by Stephen J. Kotz
