Not Abandoned

I, along with many other East Quogue residents, would like to applaud Charles McArdle, Southampton Town highway superintendent, for standing up and protecting our roads from being stolen from us.

Discovery Land took it upon itself to declare that portion of Spinney Road in East Quogue that runs through Discovery Land’s golf course as abandoned and put up a gate preventing road access [“Discovery Land Sparring With Southampton Highway Superintendent Over Rights to Dirt Road Through East Quogue Golf Course,” 27east.com, April 23]. They did this without the town’s permission. That is not how it is done. There is a procedure to follow. Moreover, the town superintendent of highways had already refused Discovery Land’s request to declare the road abandoned, which Discovery Land seems to have ignored.

Discovery Land implies that local people do not use it. Local people do use it and do want it left open.

I ask residents to contact the Southampton Town supervisor and Town Board at mmoore@southamptontown.gov to express our support of McArdle’s efforts to prevent Discovery Land from closing Spinney Road to the public.
